MEC Business Finance Series
Hosted by the Masood Entrepreneurship Centre and Paul Suchoparek, ex Finance Director of Adidas UK and founder of Sempas Accountants Limited, these sessions, running throughout Semester 2, are designed to provide a good understanding of key financial metrics to start and grow a business successfully.
This five event series of 90 minute sessions is an opportunity to learn more about trading, profits, bookkeeping, cash flow and securing further funding.
Whether you are already a start-up entrepreneur or interested in starting your own business in the future these sessions are for you.

Session 1 Pricing for Profit

This session will focus on Pricing your products/services to make a profit covering, but not limited to, the following aspects:
• Knowing your market
• Understanding and forecasting your revenues and costs
• How to price your products
• How to price a ‘service’
• Techniques to adopt for good forecasting

This session will focus on Starting up covering, but not limited to, the following aspects:
• Pre-start (demand for your product, funding position, understanding your business process)
• Structuring your business (Self employed, Limited Company, Other options)
• Registering the business
• Other responsibilities/obligations to be aware of

Session 3 Managing your Cash Flow

This session will focus on Managing your Cash Flow covering, but not limited to, the following aspects:
• Cash flow forecasting
• Ensuring you have sufficient cash during start up
• Good cash flow management practices- tips/advice
• How to avoid cash flow risks

Session 4 Knowing the Score
Thursday 27 April 2023, 10:00 - 11:45
This session will focus on Keeping the business under good financial control and important tax matters to be aware of covering, but not limited to, the following aspects:
• How to keep up to date with the business’ financial position efficiently
• Understanding a basic Profit and Loss report and how to produce one
• Claiming expenses
• Some tax points including what taxes you could pay and when, what costs are allowable, tax advantages of costs incl. R&D expenditure

Session 5 Funding your business for growth
Thursday 4 May 2023, 10:00 - 11:45
This session will focus on early stage Funding and Company Valuation covering, but not limited to, the following aspects:
Funding opportunities and process;
• Grants
• Loans
• Equity investment
Company Valuation (For when pitching to potential investors);
• What early stage investors are looking for
• Understanding forecasted future earnings and the impact of discounted cash flow
